About Us

The mission of the Mississippi Counseling Association (MCA) is:

  • To encourage the personal and professional development of counselors
  • To influence decisions that affect the counseling profession
  • To promote progress, understanding and improvement of counseling.

Mississippi Counseling Association (MCA) members are credentialed, professional counselors who work to promote positive development and adjustment among the children and adults whom they serve. MCA members work in a variety of settings including, but not limited to: mental health agencies, private practices, state employment offices, and military education offices.

The Mississippi Counseling Association (MCA) is a branch of the American Counseling Association (ACA). The association is governed by a board of officers chosen from the general membership and from the various regions, divisions, and interest groups that compose the organization.

Counselors provide services in the following areas: crisis prevention/ intervention; mental and emotional concerns; safe schools and conflict resolution; academic and career assessment; at-risk and drop-out prevention; substance abuse; child, adolescent, domestic, and elderly neglect and abuse; and marriage and family. 

MCA has established the following goals:

  • To unite persons engaged or interested in professional counseling
  • To advance the scientific discipline of counseling work in Mississippi
  • To promote sound practices within the profession of counseling in Mississipi
  • To publish scientific, educational, and professional materials related to the field of counseling
  • To promote high standards of ethical conduct within the profession
  • To promote the development of human resources in Mississippi

There are currently over 1000 members of MCA, many of whom are credentialed by:

  • National Board for Certified Counselors
  • Mississippi Board of Examiners for Licensed Professional Counselors
  • Mississippi Board of Examiners of Marriage and Family Therapists

Professional credentials promote the following:

  • High quality practice
  • Continuing professional and personal development
  • Upholding ethical and professional standards
  • Promoting the development of the counseling profession
  • Meeting the Mississippi certification/licensure standards and abiding by those laws
